It’s normal for a footballer in Spain to shoot at the “portero” (goalkeeper). It’s not normal though for footballers to shoot at the “portero” (doorman / concierge), especially with a pistol! Maybe it was the festive spirits, but Valencia right back Miguel Brito ended up spending Christmas day in prison after getting those two things mixed up! More »

Congratulations to Catalunya for their victory over Argentina yesterday, especially as half the players had just come back from Abu Dhabi the day before. Maradonna made it easier for them of course with his usual lack of tactics, illogical team selection and all the rest, but there again maybe we shouldn’t criticise him as he may get upset with us. What a couple of years this has been for Spain, and especially those of us who live in Barcelona! We have world champions in cycling, basketball, tennis, and probably some other things which I can’t think of right now, but the best is in football! The five best players in the World are Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta and Kaká (not necessarily in that order, at least yet), and they all play in La Liga. More »
So, Guilherme is the latest “bad boy” to hit Spain! Reports say that the Brazilian full-back has been sent home early for the Christmas break by Almería so he can think over his future after too many raunchy late nights out. We are privileged in Spain with some of the best goalkeepers in the World! Iker Casillas is of course the best we have seen in our lifetimes (he is already a saint in many peoples eyes and could be the next Pope?), but we also have Reina, Diego López, Palop, Víctor Valdés (who is unlucky never to have played for Spain, although he did get called up once), and then César, Moyà, Aranzubia… the list goes on. Atlético Madrid have set a new record in the Champions League! In the ten years of history of the competition, nobody has qualified for the UEFA Cup with only three points at the league stage! The Colchoneros could only draw twice against a team from Cyprus, and they even let in a goal from an ex-Cádiz centre forward Mirosavljevic who has been given the “knicker-name” of Mortadelo as he looks like the famous Spanish cartoon character, but a draw as well against Chelsea kept them ahead of APOEL. Some say Atlético have a guardian “angelito” looking after them, but he must have a funny sense of humour!
