Real Madrid made sure of first place in their group with a narrow victory against Leeds United. Both teams had already qualified for the quarter finals after the last round of games, and the only thing left to decide was who would take the top spot, a theoretical advantage going in to the quarter finals as they would play the second leg at home. Del Bosque made four changes for this game, resting Casillas and Salgado, and with Helguera suspended and Roberto Carlos on international duty, César, Geremi, Solari and Celades came in. Leeds left out Bowyer at the last minute, and with Robbie Keane cup tied Smith came back in attack.

The visitors caught Madrid by surprise early on, with Smith scoring from a possible offside position after Viduka made a run down the right. If the Lech Waleska look-alike referee, Poland's Ryszard Wojcik turned a blind eye to that one, he went for the full white stick a minute later, failing to see Raúl punch the ball in to the net from Figo's cross a minute later. The Leeds players were naturally upset, but they picked themselves up and got on with the job at hand, Smith heading straight at César a few minutes later with only the keeper to beat. Martyn had trouble dealing with a Raúl shot a few minutes later and Solari shot just wide before Figo put his side into the lead, an innocent looking shot from wide on the right taking an extraordinarily wicked bounce to deceive Martyn.

Ten minutes in to the second half Leeds were level again, Viduka rising unmarked to head Harte's corner down past César. Their joy once again only lasted a few minutes before Raúl, this time with his head, met another cross to leave Martyn stranded. Leeds were still not finished though, and Viduka should have scored again twice within a couple of minutes, his first effort hitting the outside of the post and the second just over. Gradually though Madrid slowed the game down, keeping possession of the ball as much as they could as the minutes wound down. Makelele and Figo went looking for, and finally got the yellow cards which would mean they would be banned for the totally meaningless match against Anderlecht next week and have a clean record for the quarter finals. Figo got an ovation from the crowd as he did so, probably the first time in his career that he had been cheered for committing a foul!
