Real Madrid threw away a chance of sentencing the tie in the first leg when they let Galatasaray back in the game in the second half. The Turkish side had not lost at home in 18 months, but Madrid raced into a two goal lead by the break, with Iván Helguera following up his first two goals for Spain last week with another header, his fifth goal in the Champions League this season, and then Makelele getting his first goal for his new club. The partisan 28,000 crowd in the Ali Sam Yen stadium were for once quiet at half time, but Lucescu had not given up and changed his team around, bringing on Bulent and Fatih.

The introduction of Fatih in particular revolutionised the home side, and with Roberto Carlos slowed down by a rib injury he was a constant danger down the right wing, setting up goals for Hasan and then Jardel. Before that Umit had reduced the gap with a penalty within a couple of minutes of the restart after referee Pierluigi Collina ruled that Makelele had brought down the ever troublesome Hasan. Makelele went off with an injury and Del Bosque brought on Guti for a tired Morientes, but still Roberto Carlos refused to go off. Then Jardel got his winner, and only seconds later the floodlights went out, presumably in sympathy for Real Madrid who appeared to have done the same.

With three minutes to go Jardel got the ball in the net again, but Collina disallowed the goal for a borderline offside. That could be an important decision for the second leg in a fortnight's time, with Real Madrid now only having to win by a single goal to reach the quarter finals rather than by two. The two away goals could be enough to see them through anyway, but if they had not gone to sleep at half time they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. It promises to be a cracker.
