Celta won their Intertoto cup final against Zenit St. Petersburg after coming from behind to draw 2-2 on the night and win the tie 4-3 on aggregate. The team from Vigo were down and out after Popovic gave the Russians a two goal lead with a lobbed goal in the 34th minute and a header in the 63rd. However Karpin levelled the aggregate score with a speculative shot from outside of the penalty area with eight minutes to go, and just when it looked as if the tie would go into extra time, up popped top scorer Benni McCarthy in a crowded goalmouth to stab home the winner in injury time, The result means that Celta go through to the first round of the UEFA cup together with Zaragoza, Alavés, Espanyol and almost definitely Rayo Vallecano.
