Mérida have been forced to pull out of the second division B for non payment of debts and the club will have to be wound up. Established in 1912, and in the first division only two seasons ago, the Extremadura side finished in the mid-table of the second division A last season, but were relegated to 2B for failing to pay players wages. Having failed to reach an agreement with potential new investors including a group from Mexico, the club's stand-in management have finally thrown in the towel and decided to call it a day. A new team, Mérida Promesas, will be reestablished in the third division. Other clubs such as Logroñes could soon follow Mérida's fate.
