Spain opened their 2002 World Cup campaign with an unconvincing victory over Bosnia in Sarajevo. Gerard opened the scoring with a well taken goal seven minutes from half time, but ex Real Madrid forward Baljic equalised three minutes later with a free kick which went through a crowd of players and past the unsighted Casillas. Substitute Etxeberria gave Spain the three points with a magnificent first time volley in the second half, and Camacho's team hung on with Casillas making some good saves near the end.
