The first two games of this year's Champions League were played on Tuesday night. Real Madrid came back from two goals down to earn a valuable away point at Sporting Lisbon. Sporting's striker Sa Pinto, recently rejected by Real Madrid, headed the first goal and Andre Cruz added a second from a free kick before half time. Roberto Carlos pulled one back, also from a free kick after the break, and Rui Jorge turned Raúl's shot past his own keeper Peter Schmeichel with fifteen minutes to go to level the scores at 2-2. Valencia beat Olympiakos 2-1 with two headed goals by Baraja and Diego Alonso, both from Mendieta dead ball kicks, in the first half. Djordjevic got one back in the second half with a shot which deflected off Angloma. Mendieta and Carboni both hit the woodwork with shots in a match which they should have won by a bigger margin.
