Both Real Madrid and Valencia qualified early for the next phase of the Champions League with good victories on Tuesday night. Madrid won an eight goal thriller against Bayern Leverkusen, running out 5-3 winners in the end. Figo laid on goals for Guti and Iván Helguera in the first half, but Bayer drew level each time, through Brdaric and Kirsten. Then Guti got his second and Raúl added the fourth before Rink pulled one back. Three minutes from time Figo won a penalty and scored it himself for the final result. Valencia went into a two goal lead with a late goal in each half from Juan Sánchez and Baraja before Marlet scored in injury time for Olympique Lyon to set up a nail biting finish. The 1-2 result means that Valencia are the only team to win all four matches to date. (17.10.00)
