Mixed results for Spanish teams in the first leg of the the third round of the UEFA cup. Barcelona beat hitherto undefeated Bruges by 0-2 to save their manager's head for the time being at least. First half goals by Rivaldo and Kluivert clinched it for them them. Rayo Vallecano and Celta both drew 0-0 away in below freezing temperatures against Lokomotiv Moscow and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively and have a good chance of going through in the home legs in two weeks time. Alavés will have more trouble after drawing 1-1 at home to Rosenborg. Javi Moreno gave them the lead in the second half, but a late header from Johnsen set up a difficult second leg in Norway. Espanyol virtually waved goodbye to the competition after losing 0-2 at home to Oporto, thanks to second half goals from Drulovic and Pena. (23.11.00)
