Real Madrid virtually booked their ticket for the quarter final stage of the competition with their third win out of three. A Figo penalty in the dying minutes gave them a 3-2 victory over Lazio, who have yet to get a point. Crespo opened the scoring for the Italians early on, but Morientes levelled the scores by half time. Helguera gave Madrid the lead ten minutes from the end, but a mistake from Casillas let Gottardi in two minutes later. Then Gottardi fouled Munitis in the area to hand victory back to Madrid.

Valencia and Manchester United repeated last year's scoreless draw at the Mestalla stadium. New signing Pablo Aimar made a promising debut for the home side, but with Stam in top form, Valencia were unable to break the visitors down. Both sides created chances though in an entertaining game which leaves the two clubs leading their group.

Deportivo's chances for qualifying for the next round took a body blow with a single goal defeat at Galatasaray. Suat scored early in the first half for the Turkish side, who sat back and defended their lead from then on. Deportivo now have to win their next two home games and get a result at Milan to have any real chance of going through. (14.02.01)
