UEFA Cup quarter-finals

Two magnificent goals by Rivaldo in the first half put Barcelona through to the semi-finals of the UEFA cup against Celta. The home side gave it their best, with equalising goals by Catanha and Gustavo López from the penalty spot and Mostovoi put the home side ahead on the night in injury time. But time ran out, and Barcelona qualify on the strength of away goals scored.

Rayo Vallecano (0) 2 - Alavés (3) 1
As expected Alavés went through to the semi-finals in their first ever appearance in the UEFA cup after beating Rayo on aggregate 4-2. An early Jordi Cruyff goal ended any hopes that Rayo had of overturning the result, and although Quevedo and a Luis Cembranos penalty gave Rayo victory in this game, there was never any danger that Alavés were going to lose the tie. The semi-final draw takes place tomorrow lunchtime. (15.03.01)
