Spain's under 21s did better
than their senior side defeating Holland in this friendly match in Algeciras,
on the Spanish South coast. Manager Iñaki Saez brought in two new
players for this game, Guayre from Las Palmas and Parri from Valencia. He did
however lose Atlético Madrid's Gaspar from his original 18 man selection
through injury. Holland were never a threat as Spain dominated in the first
half, with the Dutch goalkeeper Rouwelaar keeping out Guayre three times and
Pablo once. The Celta striker also hit the post with another shot before
finally beating the keeper at the start of the second half with a header after
linking up with his club mate Coira. Guayre showed why Barcelona are watching
him with a goal on his international debut before being substituted halfway
through the second half. The result was very welcome after the youngsters lost
their first game in five years against Austria last time out. While they were
playing this friendly, France were recording their third win out of three
against Bosnia in their European championship group game, putting more pressure
on Spain who have to play them in March. They are now three points behind the
French with six points from their three games, with Austria and Israel on three
points and Bosnia yet to get off the mark. |
