A generational change in the under-21 side, with last season's World Cup winning under-20 squad taking over the baton for Spain's opening game in this qualifying phase of the European Championships. With manager Iñaki Saez taking last year's team to the Olympic games, his assistant Pepe Carcelén was in charge on the night in Zenica. Only Aranzubia, Marchena and Gabri remained from the previous sides, and all three had a gruelling trip after the match to join up with the rest of their Olympic colleagues in Adelaide. Spain dominated the match throughout, and could have won by a bigger margin if Bosnia's keeper Mitrovic had not saved two penalties, the first from Orbaiz just before half time and the second from substitute Xisco near the end.
