In a rain soaked match which at times appeared closer to waterpolo than football, Espanyol won through to the second round of the competition with a two goal scoreline which gave them a 3-2 result on aggregate. Paco Flores brought in De Lucas for his match of the season, and with Oscar still injured and Tamudo in Sydney, gave Manel a run out up front in place of Serrano. Olimpia came to Spain with the intention of defending their first leg victory, packing their defence and sitting back looking for goals on the counter-attack. However the home side managed to beat the defensive wall twice in the first half, firstly through Posse after a centre from Cristóbal, and then through Manel, who had the simple task of knocking the ball into an empty net after Galca had crashed a shot from all of 35 metres against the far post. With the rain pouring down and the ball slippery, Espanyol's best tactic was to try long shots, with De Lucas, Sergio and Roger all trying their luck in the first half.

Ljubljana brought on an extra forward early in the second half, but with sheets of water now falling, the pitch started to become unplayable. In fact only the pitch around the visitors goal was visible, the rest resembling a boating pond, and as the minutes ticked away the game deteriorated into a farce. Finally with five minutes left, and thunder and lightening crashing around the Montjuic stadium, German referee Helmut Fleischer decided it was unsafe to carry on, and play was suspended. However with a seeded draw due the next day he was under pressure to finish everything off, and when the rain died down the players came back on and played out the remaining minutes. The visitors could have a valid complaint that the game should have been abandoned much earlier, but Espanyol had done enough in the first half and they go through to meet little known Austrian cup winners Grazer AK, with the first leg in Montjuic and the return in the Arnold Schwarzernegger stadium in Graz.
