A single goal by Catanha, the only one in 180 minutes of football, put Celta Vigo through once again to the last 16 of the UEFA cup. Once again conditions were difficult, but if the first 90 minutes were played on a frozen pitch, the next 90 were waterlogged. Rain had fallen all day in Vigo, and Celta's manager Víctor Fernández decided not to bring back Velasco for fear of aggravating his recent injury. Yago therefore played for the first time at right back, and McCarthy replaced the injured Mostovoi behind Catanha in attack, the young South African having scored all of his seven goals this season in European competition.

Shakhtar Donetsk (who local commentators pronounced 'donuts') were taking this game seriously having arrived a week earlier and watched Celta's last game in the league. Recently eliminated from the Champions League, they were expected to pose something of a threat, and Víctor warned his players beforehand not to be complacent. As it was though they rarely approached Cavallero's goal, only managing one real shot in each half, and Celta controlled the game for much of the time. Doriva, McCarthy and Giovanella all had pots at Virt's goal before 'the seagull' took flight, Catanha sailing through the air to get on the end of Giovanella's cross before celebrating with his trademark 'flappy wingy' sort of thing. In the second half the referee waved away Catanha's appeal for a penalty, and Karpin tested the keeper with a long shot. But the donuts had already given up, and Celta keep on writing the history books, hoping to go a couple of pages further than in previous years.
