A goal in the second minute of extra time from Luque put Mallorca through to the league stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history. With a 1-0 result from the first leg in Split to overcome, doom merchants were predicting a repeat of their failure against Molde two seasons ago. However the players were determined, especially after the ugly scenes at the end of the first leg, as a result of which Hajduk's Stimac was sitting out a six match suspension.

Mallorca started well, and after Luque had gone close three times, Eto'o levelled the tie with an individualist goal. However despite bringing on more forwards in the second half they could not make more headway, and the game went in to extra time. After Luque's goal the Croatians threw everything forward, and only brilliant goalkeeping from Leo Franco saved the day, the young keeper pulling off two vital saves from Bilic, recently linked with Zaragoza. The Mallorca players pick up a bonus of around 60 million Pesetas for reaching the lucrative league stage of the competition.
