Real Madrid qualified for the second phase of the competition with their fourth win out of four, beating Anderlecht in Brussels 0-2. Roberto Carlos returned to the side after picking up an injury playing for Brazil, and he set up the first goal with twenty minutes gone, playing in a long ball towards Raúl which defender Ilic deflected past his own keeper. Madrid kept up the pressure and it was no surprise when they added to their lead, McManaman latching on to a loose ball in the area to shoot into the top of the net ten minutes before the end of the first half.

After that they closed the game down, with Del Bosque resting players for the next league match in the second half. Youngster Rubén came on for Hierro to join his Real Madrid B team mate Pavón, who had played from the start in the absence of first choice defenders. Zinedine Zidane was serving out the last of a six match ban he picked up last season, and will be available from now on, although Del Bosque will probably give other players a chance for the last two games with nothing at risk. Madrid have 12 points from four games, with Roma second in the group with 7, Anderlecht 2 and Lokomotiv Moscow 1.
