An injury time goal by Gerard against Olympique Lyon ensured Barcelona's pass through to the second phase of the competition. After limited success with his three man trident, Rexach left Saviola on the bench, bringing in Gabri rather than Geovanni on the right of midfield. The Spanish side raced into a two goal lead with only eighteen minutes on the clock after their forwards took advantage of defensive errors, the first when Kluivert rolled the ball in to an empty net after Coupet could only block Luis Enrique's shot, and the second after good work by Xavi and Luis Enrique found Rivaldo unmarked in front of goal. The goals came against the run of play though, with the French side unable to capitalise on their many chances before half time thanks in part to another fine performance by Bonano.

The second half continued in the same vein, with most of the play in the Barcelona side of the pitch, and Lyon won no less than 20 corners throughout the game with the visitors not even getting one. Eventually they made the breakthrough, Luyindula heading in to an empty net from a possible offside position after Bonano blocked a shot by Juninho. In a frenzied last few minutes, Carrière equalised, and Lyon threw everyone forward including their keeper, needing a victory to stay in the competition. However they were caught out when Bonano won the ball and threw it to Xavi, and he played it quickly out via Geovanni to substitute Gerard, who ran the ball in to the net before Coupet could get back.

The win kept Barça top of the group on goal average, and ensured that they and Bayer Leverkusen will qualify for the next stage, both with 12 points. Fenerbahçe's defeat by Leverkusen leaves them without a point, and Lyon are sure of playing in the next round of the UEFA cup with 6 points. Barça's Luis Enrique and Cocu both picked up their third yellow cards of the competition and will miss their next game at home to the Turkish side.
