Deportivo La Coruña saved a point late in this game to give them a place in the top seedings for Friday's second phase draw as undefeated group leaders. With the team already through to the second phase, Irureta made many changes, giving Djalminha a start after the controversial Brazilian superstar had complained about a lack of opportunities. José Manuel also came in to the starting line up for the first time since joining the club three years ago, and Mauro Silva and Makaay both returned after injury.

With Molina still not fully fit Nuno kept his place in goal, and he made two fine saves in the first half from Ofiri Quaye and Alexandris. At the other end Djalminha saw his shot tipped over the bar by Georgiou, but early in the second half the home side took the lead through Alexandris, his shot taking a deflection off Donato who had only just come on for the injured César. With the game coming to a close it looked as if the Greek side were going to take the three points they needed to qualify for the UEFA cup spot. However Djalminha found Capdevila's head with a corner kick near the end for him to beat the stranded Georgiou and keep them ahead of Manchester United on goal average at the top of their group. Depor and Manchester have 10 points, Lille 6 and Olympiakos 5.
