Copa del Rey

Semi-finals

A lot of bad feeling before the semi-final draw, with Deportivo de La Coruña manager Irureta suggesting that Real Madrid would be "helped" to get the easy tie against Figueres in this their centenary year. In the end though, to the slight embarrassment of Jabo, it was Deportivo themselves who came out of the hat to play the second division B side, with the first leg to be played in Figueres next Thursday 24rd January and the return in La Coruña on Wednesday 30th. The way the Gallicians are playing away from home at the moment though, it is by no means certain they will go through.

That meant that Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid will play the other semi-final, with the first game in Bilbao on Wednesday 23rd and the return in the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday 31st, the stadium that will host the final on 6th March. The fixture heralds the return of Bilbao's manager Jupp Heynckes to Madrid, who was fired by the capital side shortly after winning the Champions League final a few years ago. (18.01.02)
