Champions League qualifying round, first leg

Wisla Krakow 3 - Barcelona 4

Barcelona came back from behind three times to take a valuable 3-4 lead into the second leg. Shaky defending in the first half let Wisla in to score through Pater (2) and Frankowski before half time, but two goals from Rivaldo, the first from the penalty spot, made it 3-2 by the break. Kluivert levelled the scores again early in the second half, and the Dutch striker laid the ball on a plate a few minutes later for Rivaldo to complete his hat-trick and put his side in front for the first time. Barcelona are now clear favourites to go through to the first league stage and should wrap things up in the return leg in Barcelona in two weeks time. (08.08.01)

Hajduk Split 1 - Mallorca 0

Mallorca left themselves with a lot to do after losing by a solitary goal to Hajduk Split. The only goal of the match came from a Balic free kick in the twentieth minute, and despite playing against ten men for most of the second half and nine for the last few minutes, they were unable to get the vital away goal they needed. They now need to win the second leg by two clear goals to reach the league stage, otherwise they will have to play in the less lucrative UEFA cup. (08.08.01)
