UEFA cup - third round, first leg

Valencia 1 - Glasgow Celtic 0

A goal fifteen minutes from the end by Vicente was enough to give Valencia a useful advantage for the second leg against Celtic in Scotland. Manager Rafa Benítez left Kily González out of the squad after the Argentine winger criticised him in the press, but his young replacement beat Douglas from a short Carboni free kick for the winner. The home side had gone close a number of times before that, with Carew and Curro Torres both hitting the woodwork in the second half, although Cañizares, back in the Valencia goal, had to make a vital save from Hartson before the break.

Slovan Liberec 3 - Mallorca 1

An away goal from Mallorca's Biagini gave them an outside chance after they had fallen three goals behind to Slovan Liberec. The Czech side, who knocked Celta Vigo out of the cup in the last round, took the lead in the second minute of the game through Lukas and Johana added a second twenty minutes later. Both goals came from defensive errors as did the third, scored by Jun just after half time. However Biagini forced the ball over the line after Campano's corner on the hour mark to set up an interesting second leg in the San Moix stadium in two week's time. (22.11.01)
