Champions league - second phase

Barcelona 2 - Galatasaray 2

Barcelona fought back in the second half of this match to salvage a point after falling two goals behind to Galatasaray. After recent disappointing performances by the Catalan side, Rexach left De Boer and Overmars on the bench and gave a start to Rochemback and Saviola. However the Turkish side caught the Barça defence off their guard early on, Umit Karan getting ahead of Andersson to poke home a cross from the left, and Fleurquin added a second shortly before half time. The home crowd whistled their players off at the break, but Rexach brought on Gerard and Overmars and the two combined to set up Saviola four minutes later. Shortly afterwards Capone was sent off for the visitors, and then Rivaldo played the ball through for Saviola to score his second of the night. Galatasaray closed ranks though and held on for a valuable point despite ending up with nine men after Hakan Unsal picked up a second yellow card in injury time. A goal-less draw between Roma and Liverpool mean that Barcelona still head the group on four points. (05.12.01)

Real Madrid 3 - Panathinaikos 0

Real Madrid recorded a comfortable victory against Panathinaikos in the second match of phase two to move clear at the top of group C with maximum points. Missing only the injured Makelele from his first choice line up, Del Bosque's side could have taken an early lead when Nikopolidis saved well from a Raúl header and then a Figo free kick. The pressure paid off however when Iván Helguera chested down a long flighted pass from Zidane on the right of the area to drive a low shot into the net through the legs of the unfortunate keeper. Raúl added two more after the break, the first a diving header from close up after the ball bobbled up from Helguera's boot, and the second a quick strike after Nikolpolidis could only push Figo's free kick against the post. When the Greek side did get forward Casillas was there to save, and Madrid ended the day in a strong position, with Sparta second on three points and the other two sides with one each.

Bayer Leverkusen 3 - Deportivo de La Coruña 0

Deportivo de La Coruña lost ground in group D after losing 3-0 to Bayer Leverkusen, their first defeat in the Champions League this season. The German side dominated the first half, and only Molina and the woodwork kept them out before the break. Depor did however have a couple of efforts at goal through Roy Makaay, who was preferred to Diego Tristán up front under Irureta's rotation system. Molina was finally beaten though after the break by a well struck free kick from Zé Roberto, and Neuville charged through the middle to add a second only three minutes later. Irureta brought on Djalminha and Tristán, but that only left them wide open at the back and Ballack got in front of Molina to head a third from a corner. The group ended up the day all square, with all four teams with one win and one loss. (04.12.01)
