UEFA cup - third round, second leg

Glasgow Celtic (0) 1 - Valencia (1) 0
(Valencia win 4-5 on penalties)

Valencia won through to the next round of the UEFA cup after an exciting penalty shoot out against Celtic. The game itself ended after 30 minutes extra time with the same result as the first leg, 1-0 to the home side, with the only goal coming from Larsson in injury time of the first half. Douglas saved Vicente's kick in the shoot out, but misses from Larsson and Petrov gave Ayala the chance to end it. However Douglas saved again to take it to the sudden death stage. Cañizares saved from Vangaeren, but referee Knud Fisker ordered the kick to be retaken. However Cañizares repeated the save, and Mista made no mistake with the next penalty to take Valencia through as Spain's only surviving side in the competition.

Mallorca (1) 1- Slovan Liberec (3) 2

Mallorca's participation in European competitions ended when they were defeated for the second time in a fortnight by Slovan Liberec. Needing to win by at least two clear goals, Sergio Kresic put out a side with three forwards. However the Czech side showed that their victory over Celta in the last round was not just a fluke when Baffour scored on a counterattack in the second half, and Stajner added another a few minutes later after a mix up between Leo Franco and Vicente. Eto'o pulled one back from the penalty spot near the end, but they were well beaten and Slovan go through to the last sixteen on merit. (06.12.01)
