UEFA cup - fourth round, second leg

Servette (0) 2 - Valencia (3) 2

As expected, Valencia cruised through to the quarter finals of the UEFA cup after drawing 2-2 at Servette. With a three goal lead under their belts from the first leg, Rafa Benítez gave a run out to some of his reserve players, with Palop lining up in goal and Sánchez and Carew up front. Sánchez gave them the early lead somewhat fortuitously, his shot ballooning off Bah over Pedat into the net for a vital away goal. That meant that the Swiss would have to score five to win, but they set about the task with a gusto and after a period of pressure levelled the scores through Robert. The Spanish side went back in front though on the stroke of half time after Sánchez played on Vicente's cross for Angulo to finish off, and even though Frei made it all square again midway through the second half, there was never any doubt about the final result. Valencia go on to play Inter Milan in the next round, an attractive tie made all the more interesting as the Italians are now managed by their old manager Héctor Cúper. (28.02.02)
