Spain topped their group in
brilliant fashion after beating Yugoslavia 5-1 in their last group match. Both
teams came in to this game with maximum points from their first two fixtures,
and the East Europeans were expected to put up a strong fight. However they
turned up with a team packed with reserves and were no match for Juan
Santiesteban's side, who went in front with a strong shot from their top scorer
Jonathan past keeper Baletic. Gavilán made it two with half an hour
gone, and a minute later Jonathan scored his seventh of the tournament after a
fantastic move involving most of the team. Spain added two more goals after the
break from Corominas and David Rodríguez to complete the humiliation of
their opponents, who did at least get a consolation goal in the last minute
from Lecic. Both teams qualify for the quarter finals, with Yugoslavia playing
England and Spain taking on hosts Denmark next Saturday afternoon.
