Valencia enjoyed themselves in the second leg of this tie, building on their away win with a five goal drubbing of Chernomorets who appeared to be a group of Russian tourists on holiday rather than a serious footballing side. Rafa Benítez gave a chance to players who had not appeared much this season, with Marchena and Rufete coming in to midfield and Mista, Juan Sánchez and Ilie in attack. Sánchez took his opportunity with two well taken goals in the opening half hour, the first from Marchena's pass from the left and the second a header after good work by Rufete.

In between Adrian Ilie got his first of the season, and in the second half substitute Salva and Rufete added two more for the final scoreline. The only downside was a serious injury to Mista after he clashed with the keeper, and he was rushed off to hospital for tests. Afterwards it was revealed that he had swallowed his tongue and lost consciousness on the pitch, although he is expected to recover fully and be playing again in two or three weeks. Valencia were top seed in the draw the next day, and will play Poland's' Legia Warsaw next month.
