Celta 3 - Slovan Liberec 1
Celta: Pinto; Coira, Sergio, Cáceres, Silvinho; Giovanella, Doriva; Edu (Karpin 81'), Mostovoi, Jesuli (Gustavo López 63'); Maurice (McCarthy 63'). 4-2-3-1.
Mostovoi came to the rescue of Celta with a late hat-trick on a rainy night in Vigo. The Russian was one of the few first choice players in Víctor Fernández's squad, the manager reserving many of his best players for Sunday's clash with Real Madrid, and he gave the home side the lead ten minutes before half time with a well struck free kick. Jesuli hit the post after the restart, but the Czech side were holding their own and they levelled the scores soon afterwards when Edú put through his own net.
Víctor had just brought on Gustavo López and McCarthy before the goal, and it was Gustavo who played the ball through to Mostovoi for him to put Celta back in front with a quarter of an hour left on the clock. They needed one more though to go in to the second leg with a comfortable cushion, and the Tsar obliged again, coolly rounding the keeper to complete his hat-trick in the last minute.
