An injury time goal from Juventus substitute Tudor dumped Deportivo La Coruña out of the competition. With Manchester United already assured of first place in the group, Irureta's side really needed to win in Italy to give them a fighting chance, although a draw would at least have kept them in the running for the second spot. The manager put out his strongest possible line up, with Makaay and Tristán leading the attack, and Molina returned to the substitutes' bench for the first time since recovering from cancer. There was nice touch from the local fans, who put up a giant poster wishing him a speedy return.

The Gallicians started with firm intent, Buffon having to save from Fran and Tristán shooting just wide. However in the twelfth minute they found themselves behind when Ferrara headed Camoranesi's corner past Juanmi, and the move was almost repeated soon afterwards, this time the defender's header going just wide. Makaay had a golden opportunity to level the scores when one-on-one with the keeper but he fluffed his shot, although he made up for it a few minutes later when he curled a cross into the path of Tristán for him to equalise.

And then soon after the restart Makaay picked up a long pass from Héctor and made himself space with a quick turn before beating Buffon to put his side in front. For a few minutes there was hope of a victory, but Trezeguet levelled the scores again after Davids' pass was deflected to him off César. After that it was end to end stuff, with Trezeguet hitting the post and Zalayeta heading wide for the home side, and Héctor heading at the keeper and Duscher shooting over the bar for the visitors.

It appeared as if honours were going to be shared, but in the last minute of injury time Andrade could only head Thuram's long cross up into the air, and the ball fell to late substitute Tudor who struck a first time volley wide of Juanmi. Deportivo were out of their second cup competition in eight days, and now only have the league left to try and win some silverware this season. The Italians are virtually through, although Basel's draw at Manchester means the Swiss could pip them if they can beat them by more than four goals next week.
