Deportivo La Coruña won a meaningless match against Manchester United, the Gallicians already out of the competition after their last minute defeat the week before at Juventus and the English side assured of being group D champions. Both managers used the tie to try out their reserves, with players such as Dani Mallo, Toro Acuña, Capdevila and Manuel Pablo being given a run out for the home side and Sir Alex Ferguson putting out a team packed with youngsters, with ex Valladolid keeper Ricardo in goal.

Irureta gave the striker's shirt to Luque, and the youngster set up the first goal before the break with a burst of speed which left Blanc for dead before setting up Víctor for an easy tap in. And then two minutes in to the second half Víctor got free of his marker down the right flank and put in a high cross which Lynch could only head past Ricardo under pressure from Luque. César cleared a shot from Fletcher off the line and Giggs hit the post as United tried to get back in the match, but the prize money went to the Gallicians to compensate them for their elimination. If only they had held on a minute longer in Italy.
