Real Madrid are out of the Champions League. Spain's last representative fell at the semi-final stage to a Juventus side who were too good on the night, and now have to redeem themselves by winning the only trophy available to them the Spanish league title. After their surprise defeat at the hands of Mallorca with a depleted side, Del Bosque was able to count on Figo and Zidane, both recovered from their injuries, and also Raúl playing his first game since his appendix operation. Makelele was out though after limping off against Mallorca, and Ronaldo had not fully recovered from his calf injury, and after speculating with a three man central defence, the manager finally opted to draft in Cambiasso and Flavio and play Guti up front with Raúl.

The game got off to a lively start, Roberto Carlos shooting just wide at one end and Del Piero putting another effort over the bar at the other. However in the twelfth minute the Spaniards found themselves behind when Trezeguet finished off after Del Piero headed back Nedved's cross, a goal which cancelled out Madrid's 2-1 lead from the first leg. Later in the half Casillas had to save from Trezeguet, and before the break the Italians went two up, Del Piero controlling a long ball out of midfield and shimmying past Hierro and Salgado before shooting low inside Casillas's near post.

Del Bosque had no option but to bring on Ronaldo early in the second half to try and turn things around, and it appeared to have done the trick when Montero brought the Brazilian striker down in the area. The Madrid players protested to refereeUrs Meier that he should have shown what would have been a second yellow card to the Uruguayan defender, but he waved them away and when everything settled down, Buffon dived to save Figo's penalty kick. Minutes later Nedved ran on to a long Zambrotta pass, leaving Hierro trailing behind him as he volleyed the ball into the net, and it seemed to be all over. Zidane pulled one back though a minute from the end of normal time after a long ball from Raúl, setting up a nail biting five minutes of injury time. But Juventus held on to win through to an all Italian final against AC Milan in a fortnight's time.
