The regionalised draw for the preliminary round of the Spanish cup took place on 5th August, with ties to be played over two legs on 28th August and 4th September. Some 34 teams enter the competition at this stage, made up of 17 of the top teams from second division B and the 17 third division group winners (second placed teams where group champions were B sides of teams in higher divisions). The winners go on to participate in the first round together with first and second division A sides. Preliminary round first leg The first leg matches of the
Copa del Rey took place from 27th to 29th August, with return legs due a week
later. Two of last year's giant killing sides, Figueres and L'Hospitalet missed
out on this year's competition, the former because they didn't finish high
enough in the league and the latter due to the one season ban imposed for
refusing to play their quarter final tie with Deportivo. Another Catalan side,
Lleida, who knocked out cup-holders Espanyol last year, were well beaten by
Hércules and look to be on their way out. Full results were as
