Málaga got off to the best possible start against re-instated Villarreal in the all Spanish final, wiining the first leg away from home 0-1. The only goal came in the eighth minute of the game from Gerardo, who struck his free kick into the top corner of López Vallejo's net. Villarreal finally woke up in the second half, but Contreras saved well from substitute Aranda and Quique Alvarez headed wide with the goal at his mercy in injury time. (13.08.02)
