UEFA cup - first round, second leg

A full house for Spanish sides, with all four qualifying for the second round.

Betis 2 - Zimbru 1

Betis manager Víctor Fernández rested almost all of his first choice squad for the match against Zimbru after their victory in the first leg, but even so they won 2-1 on the night. Tais and Casas scored in the first half hour, and although Cebotari pulled one back from the penalty spot soon afterwards the result was never in question.

Málaga 1 - Zeljeznicar 0

Málaga made hard work of beating Zeljeznicar, and only an early Dely Valdés penalty took them through after a scoreless draw in Sarajevo a fortnight ago. The result was in doubt until Silic was sent off for the visitors ten minutes from the end.

Odense 1 - Celta 0

Celta also struggled, and only went through thanks to the two goals scored in the first leg. They lost on the night 1-0 to Odense, and were thankful that the Danes' goalscorer Derveld was sent off soon after he beat Pinto with a free kick. Substitute Catanha had a penalty saved near the end which would have made life much easier for the Gallicians had he scored.

Alavés 3 - Ankaragücü 0

Alavés had no problems in their game with Ankaragücü though, beating them 3-0 in their second leg game. Their first home victory of the season came thanks to an early strike from Iván Alonso and two second half goals from Turiel. (03.10.02)
