UEFA cup , second round

Alavés 1 - Besiktas 1

An injury time goal by Abelardo saved a draw for Alavés at home to Besiktas. The ex Barcelona defender powered a header past Oscar Córdoba from a late corner as most fans had given up hope that they would ever score. The Turkish side had taken the lead on the half hour mark when Karmona turned Dobra's cross past his own keeper. A few minutes earlier Iván Alonso had hit the post for the Basque side, but otherwise the visitors looked the better side. Alavés now have a tricky visit to Istanbul in a fortnight's time as they try to repeat their successes of two seasons ago. (31.10.02)

Celta 3 - Viking FK 0

Celta made easy work of disposing of Norway's Viking Stavanger, running out 3-0 winners to virtually ensure their qualification for the third round. Missing the injured Mostovoi, Gustavo López and Vagner, Lotina was forced to remodel his midfield. However the new men fitted in well, and after Jandro hit the bar, Jesuli set up José Ignacio to score the opening goal past ex Sevilla keeper Olsen. Three minutes later Edu finished off after Catanha mis-hit a shot, giving the Gallicians a two goal lead at the break. The game slowed down in the second half, but substitute McCarthy added a third for the home side with a curling shot from outside of the area. (31.10.02)

Málaga 2 - Amica Wronki 1

Málaga's European inexperience showed through, and they made hard work of winning this match against what should have been an easy opponent, the unknown Amica Wronki. However the Polish side caught them out when Krol scored an important away goal with only one minute on the clock, and it took Peiró's side most of the game to get back. Amica sat back to defend their advantage, and it was only shortly before half time that Romero levelled the scores after a Darío Silva free kick hit the bar. Dely Valdés headed the winner in the second half from Manu's cross, and despite several close calls they were unable to add to their lead after that. (31.10.02)

Viktoria Zizkov 0 - Betis 1

A single goal from Denilson on the stroke of half time gave Betis a 0-1 away win in their first leg tie at Viktoria Zizkov. The Czech side had not lost at home in two years, and had already eliminated Glasgow Rangers from the competition, and Víctor Fernandez took a full strength squad (and around 200 fans) with him to Prague to make sure. Betis went close a couple of times before Denilson struck with a shot from outside of the area, and Casas wasted a couple of opportunities to extend the lead early in the second half. However Prats was forced to make three or four good saves in the final minutes to hold on to the win. (29.10.02)
