Second division, day 17

Whilst the first division registered one of the highest number of goals of the season, the second division produced another low scoring weekend, with only 17 in the eleven ties. That included six draws, and with none of the top eleven sides able to win, the competition for the three promotion spots is hotting up. The biggest game on Sunday was between second placed Levante and fourth placed Murcia, but in the end they cancelled each other out in a dull 0-0 draw. Their nearest rivals did no better though, with Salamanca and Racing Ferrol also drawing 0-0 and third placed Albacete losing 0-1 to bottom club Oviedo thanks to a late goal from Oli. Changes at the bottom of the table, where Leganés moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over neighbours Getafe, and Compostela surprised Poli Ejido winning 0-2 away. The Gallicians almost didn't travel to the South of Spain, the players threatening to strike after going several months without pay. (05.01.03)

Six games in the second division on Saturday night, with leaders Zaragoza putting an end to Sporting Gijon's run of four wins in a row by holding them to a 1-1 draw. Juanele scored first for the visitors, but Villa equalised from the penalty spot later on. Xerez lost ground on the leaders after they were beaten 1-2 by Almería. Both sides missed a penalty after the break but scored on the rebound. Francisco had given the visitors the lead just before half time. Elche also missed out on an opportunity to move closer to the top three when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Eibar, and Terrassa saved a point with a late penalty in a 1-1 draw at Numancia. Las Palmas started the new year with a 2-0 win against Badajoz, a bad start for the visitors' new manager Zurdo López, and the other team from the Canary Islands, Tenerife, scraped a 1-1 draw at Córdoba thanks to an injury time goal from Barata.
