Second division, day 31

The fight for the second division promotion spots is a little more open after none of the top three sides managed to win. Leaders Murcia were beaten 2-0 by Xerez on Sunday lunchtime thanks to two late goals by Zárate and Mendoza, and Bernd Schuster's side are now fifth, six points off the top three. Albacete missed out on the chance to take over at the top after they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Salamanca, but they closed to within a point of Murcia in second place.

The winners of the weekend were Zaragoza, who beat relegation candidates Almería 0-1. Their new young star Cani got the only goal in the first half, taking his side in to third spot, ahead of Levante who lost 3-2 at Sporting Gijon. Congo gave the Valencia based side hope with two goals late in the match to level the scores, but Villa scored the winner for the Asturians right at the end.

Racing Ferrol and Badajoz sink further down into the relegation spots after they were defeated 4-2 and 0-2 by Numancia and Compostela respectively. Leganés are now in eighteenth position after they lost at home 0-3 to Córdoba, and Eibar and Getafe edged away from the danger zone after drawing 0-0. (13.04.03)

Mixed fortunes for the Canary Island clubs on Saturday evening. Two goals in three minutes late in the first half from Pedro Vega gave Las Palmas a 2-0 win over Poli Ejido to take them to fifth place, four points behind Zaragoza who play on Sunday. Tenerife meanwhile were beaten 1-0 by Elche, thanks to a second half goal from Armentano and a great performance by local keeper Aizkorreta. Terrassa and Oviedo drew 2-2, a result which leaves the Asturians still down in bottom spot. (12.04.03)
