Champions league - semi-final, second leg

Juventus 3 - Real Madrid 1

Real Madrid are out of the Champions League. Spain's last representative fell at the semi-final stage to a Juventus side who were too good on the night. The Spaniards found themselves behind early on when Trezeguet finished off after Del Piero headed back Nedved's cross, a goal which cancelled out Madrid's 2-1 lead from the first leg. And before the break the Italians went two up, Del Piero controlling a long ball out of midfield and shimmying past Hierro and Salgado before shooting low inside Casillas's near post. Del Bosque had left the injured Ronaldo on the bench, but he had to bring him on early in the second half to try and turn things around. It appeared to have done the trick when Montero brought the Brazilian striker down in the area, but Buffon dived to save Figo's penalty kick. Minutes later Nedved ran on to a long Zambrotta pass to volley the ball into the net, and it seemed to be all over. Zidane pulled one back though a minute from the end of normal time after a long ball from Raúl, setting up a nail biting five minutes of injury time. But Juventus held on to win through to an all Italian final against AC Milan in a fortnight's time. (14.05.03)
