Spain reached the final of
the European championship with a convincing 5-2 win over Austria. The hero of
the night was David Rodríguez, who scored four of the goals, three of
which came in the first half. The Atlético Madrid striker headed his
side in front early on from Silva's cross, and the two combined again ten
minutes later for him to add a second. Then soon afterwards Cases drifted
through the defence to make it three and virtually sentence the game against
what had been one of the best defences in the tournament to date.
Silva hit the post before
David completed his hat-trick late in half, and Juan Santiesteban rested right
back Ruz and his captain Jurado at the start of the second half, already
thinking about the final. But Stankovic set up Fuchs and then scored himself in
a four minute period around the hour mark, and Austria were back in it.
Santiesteban brought on Sisinio though to settle things down, and a few minutes
later David volleyed his fourth of the night to put the game beyond the reach
of their opponents. Spain go on to play hosts Portugal in Saturday's final,
sure at least of a place in this summer's youth world cup in Finland.
