Spain lost the final to
hosts Portugal 2-1, although they still qualify for this summer's World Cup in
Finland as runners up in the competition. Juan Santiesteban's youngsters were
unable to produce any of the form they had shown in previous rounds, and found
themselves behind midway through the first half when Sousa volleyed a shot over
keeper Adán from the left of goal. And it could have been two before the
break, Raúl Llorente clearing a Joao Pablo lob off the line on the
stroke of half time.
A minute after the restart
Atlético Madrid's David Rodríguez gave his side hope, heading
Sisinio's cross past Felgueiras to confirm his position as the tournament's top
scorer with six goals. But Portugal hit the winner five minutes later when a
free kick from Sousa caught keeper Adán off his line, and even though
the manager threw on extra forwards there was no way through a well organised
local defence. It was Portugal's fifth title in the twenty years that the
competition has been running, taking them to within one of Spain's record six.
