Ullevaal stadium, Oslo. Spain won the first ever under 19 European tournament thanks to a second half goal from Atlético Madrid's Fernando Torres. Iñaki Saéz was in charge of the youth team for the last time before moving up to take over the from Camacho as manager of the full national side, and with Reyes passing a late fitness test and team captain Murillo returning from suspension he was able to count on a full strength side.

With less than a minute on the clock, Fernando Torres broke through but shot wide under pressure. That heralded a period of attack from Spain, with German keeper Daniel Haas following in Kahn's footsteps with a series of first class saves, in particular from Torres, Sergio and Reyes. At the other end Hanke went close near the break, hooking the ball just wide as Moyà closed him down.

Shortly after the break Reyes was put through, but once again Haas was good enough to anticipate his lob. But a few minutes later a moment of indecision between the keeper and defender Fathi was enough for Torres to stick out a foot and poke the ball into the net. It was the big striker's fourth of the tournament, and was to prove the winning goal. Stielike threw on extra forwards but Spain held on, and when Hanke shot over the bar in injury time it was all over.
