A superior Betis side made virtually certain of reaching the second round after a comfortable away victory in Moldova. The game started slowly, the poor conditions of the pitch and the close man-to-man marking by the home side making creative play difficult. However Betis took the lead on the half hour mark from one of their few attacks, Alfonso taking advantage of a loose ball to beat the keeper after Fernando battled through.

Zimbru threw everything forward, but just before half time Betis came away again and Dinu put through his own net under pressure from Rivas. After the break it was more of the same, and although Gvazava produced some dangerous moments, Prats looked comfortable in goal. With the game in the bag, Víctor Fernández rested Joaquín and Alfonso, and the return leg in a fortnight's time should be a mere formality.
