Málaga won through to the second round in their first ever appearance in the UEFA cup, although they had to suffer in the end to get there. With a goal-less draw from the first leg, Joaquín Peiró was forced to put out a full strength side, missing only the injured Darío Silva. His replacement was Koke, and the youngster revindicated his selection winning a penalty after a good run in the fifth minute which Dely Valdés put away.

Málaga kept up the pressure looking for a second goal, knowing that as things stood an away goal from their opponents would knock them out. But Dely failed to take two opportunities set up for him by Musampa and Sandro, and the home fans held their breaths as Tica missed an easy chance from only three yards out.

The Spaniards continued their domination after the break, but the Sarajevo based side were always dangerous with their long high balls on the counterattack. Peiró brought on Romero and then Leko to shore up midfield, but it was only when Karic was sent off ten minutes from the end with a direct red card did the team finally believe they were going through.
