Málaga were held to a scoreless draw at home by Leeds United and now have to at least get a goal in Elland Road in a fortnight's time to go through to the next round. The home side were missing star striker Darío Silva (described as the Alan Smith of Spanish football), who broke a couple of ribs at the weekend, and Peiró decided to switch Musampa into the middle, with Iznata taking his place on the left wing. Leeds though were worse off, with nine players unavailable including Viduka, Fowler, Mills and Barmby, and ex Barcelona manager Terry "El Tel" Venables had to put out what he had got, with Duberry acting as makeshift central defender.

The home side started energetically, but soon faded under the pressure from the visitors. Dely Valdés failed to control a back-heel pass from Musampa and Iznata tried a long shot, but to no avail. With a quarter of an hour on the clock Contreras was in the right place to block a shot from Alan Smith, and Smith was in the action again two minutes later when he tried in vain to get on the end of Kewell's cross.

The game was starting to get aggressive though, and the players squared up to each other more than once. Smith was lucky not to get himself a second booking after a hard tackle on Contreras soon after he picked up a first yellow card for protesting, although he will miss the next leg as the caution was his third of the competition.

The action continued either side of half time, with Contreras saving again from Kewell before the break and Robinson getting a hand to a Dely Valdés shot immediately after. Peiró made a double substitution, bringing on Edgar and Koke and switching Musampa to his more natural left side, and Dely Valdés tested Robinson with a header later on. But Leeds had done their homework well, and they must now be favourites to take the tie in the return leg two weeks from now.
