Celta Vigo lost their tie against Glasgow Celtic on the away goal rule despite winning their second leg match 2-1 on the night. Lotina brought Jesuli back into the starting line up, and he gave the Gallicians hope with an opening goal midway through the first half to square the tie at one all. For a few minutes it looked as if a second goal was on the cards, but shortly before half time the Scots struck a killer blow, Hartson forcefully shaking off the flu-ridden Berizzo to turn and fire a shot wide of Pinto. Celta's appeals for a foul were turned down by Danish referee Klaus Bo Larsen and the vital away goal stood, leaving Celta needing two more goals to go through.

South Africa's Benni McCarthy was deputising for the suspended Catanha, and he restored the lead ten minutes in to the second half, running on to a Gustavo López pass to blast the ball past Douglas while Celtic's Lennon was receiving treatment on the touchline. As time started to run out, Lotina took off defenders to put on more attacking players, but without the skills of Catanha and in particular the injured Mostovoi they could not find a way past Douglas, Balde and company. When Jesuli's injury time effort was deflected just wide it was all over, and Celta had crashed out of the competition. Celebrations by the Celtic fans got a little out of hand though, and a plane taking a group of supporters home had to make an emergency landing in Cardiff. They didn't care too much though, their side was still in a European competition at Christmas for the first time in 23 years.
