Deportivo made it through to the league stage of the competition for the fourth year in a row after defeating Rosenborg by a single goal. Although the Gallicians dominated the game they were only able to beat keeper Espen Johnsen once, and the fans suffered in the last few minutes as a goal from the Norwegians would have taken them through on the away goal rule after the score-less draw in the first leg.

Irureta put out a similar side to the first leg, although he preferred the more attacking Luque to Fran on the left wing. It was to prove a crucial decision as the young striker was to score the only goal of the match on the quarter hour mark, controlling Sergio's pass and running on to fire a shot into the top of the net.

Sergio had already gone close before the goal, and keeper Espen Johnsen saved well from Víctor and then Valerñon before the half time whistle. The light entertainment though was provided by a seagull, which landed on the pitch nad which obliged Slovakan referee Lubos Michel to halt play for a few minutes whilst it was chased away.

Víctor hit the post after the break and Héctor, Luque and Pandiani all had efforts frustrated as Depor came out looking for the goal which would make the match safe. It wouldn't come though, and Molina had to save from Frode Johnsen to maintain their lead. Eventually though the long awaited final whistle came to ensure that Deportivo's name goes into the hat for next Thursday's draw.
