Celta scraped through to the league stage of the competition, thanks mainly to the 3-0 lead they had from the first leg. Miguel Angel Lotina's side must have felt that they were safe after such a large victory, but they were caught off their guard and found themselves two goals down with only half an hour gone. The first goal came in the eighteenth minute when Belgian referee Frank De Beecklere awarded a dubious corner to the Czech side, Dostalek rising to head the kick wide of Cavallero. Lotina's protest were so strong that the referee produced a red card and sent the manager up into the stands for the rest of the game. And shortly after Edu hit the bar at the other end, Hrdlicka took advantage of some slack defending to scramble a second a few minutes later.

Celta should have put the result out of Slavia's reach on a number of occasions though, particularly when the unfortunate Edu failed to score when alone in front of keeper Kozacik. Kuka did have a chance to level the tie just before half time, but he wasted his chance. After the restart, Edu once again was off target when presented with a free header, and the clock ticked down slowly. With ten minutes to go the visitors were reduced to ten men when Mostovoi picked up a second booking, and Cavallero had to be at his best to resist the final onslaught. But the Vigo based side were the winners in the end and enter the Champions League proper for the first time in their history.
