Deportivo La Coruña beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to move up to second in their group on four points. The visitors had never won in Spain in their seven previous visits, and manager Guus Hiddink decided on caution, assigning midfielder Van der Schaaf to shadow Deportivo playmaker Valerón. That didn't stop him from crossing in early on, and Hofland was fortunate not to score in his own net when his attempted headed clearance struck the bar.

A few minutes later though Sergio gave the hosts the lead following a short free kick, his shot taking a deflection off Van der Schaaf to wrong foot keeper Waterreus. Pandiani had the chance to increase the lead immediately after the break but shot wide, but soon afterwards he did get his name on the scoresheet from the penalty spot after Ooijer pushed over Valerón in the area. It was the Uruguayan striker's seventh goal in as many games, and he is already on the way to replacing ex team mate Roy Makaay as Spain's top scorer.

Hiddink brought on an extra striker, but his side could not find a way past an efficient offside trap which caught them out over ten times in the match. Park did eventually get a chance but shot over the bar, and at the other end substitute Diego Tristán went very close to making it three with a shot which rolled just past the post. Depor are well on the way though to a place in the last sixteen, always assuming they can get good results in their next two matches against Monaco and their new Spanish striker Fernando Morientes.
