Real Sociedad made it two wins in a row after beating Galatasaray 1-2, and they and Juventus open up a six point gap over the other two. Although the game was played in the Atatürk stadium as the Turkish side's ground was under repairs, the atmosphere was electric. A lot of the animosity of the crowd was directed at ex Besiktas player Nihat who was returning to face his old rivals, but he was not in the slightest intimidated by it. With only three minutes on the clock the Turkish forward produced a dazzling run down the left wing to leave Tamas for dead and cross in for Kovacevic to turn the ball into the net.

Galatasaray pushed back and full back César Prates caused some problems until he had to leave the field injured. Hasan Sas could also have scored but his own player blocked his shot, but Kovacevic too could have added to the lead before the break if he had taken advantage of a couple of opportunities.

With just over an hour gone though the home side equalised, Hakan Sukur running on to a precision through ball from Arif to beat Westerveld. Denoueix decided to make changes, but rather than bring on De Pedro, who had been his best player at the weekend, he opted for the more defensive Alkiza and Lee Chun Soo to replace Nihat and Gabilondo.

With the locals still attacking, it looked as if the Basques had their back to the walls. But they went back into the lead against the run of play when Xavi Alonso got on the end of Karpin's corner to head into the roof of the net. Sabri tested Westerveld a couple of times after that, but Galatasaray's challenge ended when they were left with ten men after Hasan Sas was sent off for retaliating against Alkiza after a hard tackle. Real and Juventus now look well set to go through, and the two will face off against each other in the next two games.
