Real Madrid came back from a goal down to win for the second Champions League match in a row, and they ended the day well clear at the top of their group. The Spanish league champions found themselves under pressure on a rainy night in Porto, and Casillas had to tip away an early shot from Mendes. And soon afterwards they fell behind when Casillas could only push away a speculative free kick from Deco, and Costinho headed the ball back over him into the net. Madrid were missing the injured Beckham and Raúl from their starting line up, but Helguera was back in his favourite midfield role, and he combined with Beckham's replacement Solari to head the equaliser down past Vitor Baia just before the half hour mark. And by half time the Merengues had turned the game around, Solari taking advantage of a rare appearance to score after Roberto Carlos slid across Ronaldo's pass into the area.

Mourinho brought on Benni McCarthy in a double change at the break, and within two minutes the ex Celta striker had got the ball in the net. However Italian referee Pierluigi Collina ruled it out for a clear offside. Casillas stood his ground to hold on to a long shot from Deco soon afterwards, but midway through the second half Madrid went further ahead through Zidane, the French midfielder (playing with stitches in his head after a bad cut in the first half) latching on to Figo's square free kick to shoot past Baia from the edge of the area. Casillas saved again later on from another old friend of Spanish football, Jankauskas, and Maniche shot just wide as Porto tried to get back. But right at the end Raúl, who had come on for the last few minutes for Ronaldo, almost made it four with a chip just wide of the post.
